Uncover Our History

The New Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church was organized in May of 1952 in the home of Brother and Sister Ike Bradley at 136 Tennyson St. New Mt. Moriah is an outgrowth of Greater New Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, located at 586 Owen in Detroit, MI.

Rev. J.S. Murray organized and pastored until January of 1958. At that time the membership consisted of 130 members. The leaders were: Roosevelt Thomas (Chairman of the Deacon Board), Henry Harris (Chairman of the Trustee Board), Sis. M.J. Coleman (President of the Missionary Society), Bro. G.L. Whetstone (Sunday School Superintendent) and Bro. William Lawrence (Church Secretary).

Our first service was held at the Alger School Auditorium on Kenilworth Street, from there we went to Northern High School at 9026 Woodward Ave, we later held service at the Moore School Auditorium. In 1953 we purchased a temporary building at Woodward and Longfellow. We had to move from this location because it was zoned as a residential area. Services were then held at 8839 Oakland Avenue at Holbrook in the St. John Grand Lodge Scottish Rite Mason’s Hall. The membership continued to grow in great numbers and several new auxiliaries were organized. In August 1955 we purchased a church building at 2627 Blaine.

In June of 1959, Rev. H.L. Davis was called to the Pastorate and served until June of 1961. During the following eleven months our Assistant Ministers were: Rev. Thomas Ray, Rev. W.M. Bowman and Rev. Robert E. Peele. They, along with our Official Board, maneuvered through many difficult times.

On May 15, 1962, Rev. John James Tillman accepted the Pastoral calling of the membership. Under his leadership, the Lord led us to even greater heights. Greater accomplishments were made, and many debts were liquidated, but above all, many souls were brought to Christ.

On November 20, 1977, we paraded from 2627 Blaine in Detroit to our present site. In 1979, Pastor Tillman presented us with a Mortgage Lifting Drive Program plan to pay off the indebtedness of the church. Praises to God, we paid off our church and burned our mortgage in just four short years. On July 31, 1985, after serving faithfully as one of the most dynamic leaders of the community, Rev. John James Tillman was regretfully retired due to ill health. He served as our Pastor Emeritus until he went home to be with the Lord.

On September 19, 1986, the membership unanimously elected Rev. Dr. Jerome Kirby as Pastor. On September 28, 1986, he accepted the Pastoral calling. The late, Rev. Whetstone, Rev. E.G. Wilson, Rev. Archie Taylor along with Rev. Lawrence C. Glass, Jr., and Rev. Henry Hall, Jr., served as Pastor Kirby’s Associate Ministers. Later, Rev. Anthony Halley, Jr., Rev. Caleb Jones, Rev. Michael Svoeuy, Rev. Robert Alexander, Rev. Frederick Davis, the late Rev. Paul Grays and the late Rev. Odie Hoover all served as Rev. Kirby’s Associate Ministers. Without a doubt, Pastor Kirby was one of world’s most inspired and gifted preachers, a great teacher, philosopher, leader, organizer and singer. Under his leadership over 500 souls were added to our church in being a blessing to the surrounding community. This included making monthly donations to area homeless shelters, Vacation Bible School, an Annual Neighborhood Victory Parade, neighborhood witnessing campaigns, feeding thousands during Thanksgiving, and other community focused events designed to bring Christ to those who needed Him. Pastor Kirby encouraged and nurtured our youth with various ministries such as: Candy Stripers, Jr. Deacons, Scholarship Fund, Youth Choir, Sunshine Choir, Youth trips and events. He initiated many improvements to our building, all to ensure a beautiful, comfortable and welcoming environment for all who come through the Church doors. Pastor Kirby followed the vision of our Master. He served well until his death in December 2012.

On Sunday, April 12, 2015, Rev. Dr. Kelvin Brooks was installed as Pastor. He began his “divine restoration of the hearts of men." Our church underwent great physical improvements. There was a gap period due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the Lord continued to bless us while we were shut down.

Thanks be to God that we have come this far by faith. With prayer and faith in God, we will continue on. October 30, 2021, marked a new chapter in New Mt. Moriah’s history. On this day, Rev. Eddie Cooper, Jr., was voted as Pastor Elect and on December 5, 2021, Rev. Cooper was installed as the fifth Pastor of New Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Cooper loves all of God’s people but working with the youth has always been a passion of his. He is motivated to help the youth in the city of Detroit grow in and live out their faith. While his interests vary, his primary passion remains to work with the children and youth to forcefully and powerfully advance the message of Christ and His kingdom.

We know that the best is yet to come, for we are a church anchored to the ROCK but moved by the SPIRIT!
